What an XML sitemap does

A sitemap lists the URLs you want indexed, with the date each one last changed. Google does not need it to find a well-linked site, but it uses it to discover pages that are new or deep, and to decide which URL is canonical when several look alike.

This generator crawls a site from its home page, follows internal links, and writes the sitemap.xml you upload to the root. It skips URLs that redirect, return errors or point off-site.

What a good sitemap contains

• Only URLs that return 200, are canonical and are meant to be indexed. A sitemap with redirects or noindex pages sends mixed signals.
• Real lastmod dates. If every URL says today, Google learns to ignore the field.
• Under 50,000 URLs and 50 MB per file. Larger sites split into several sitemaps and a sitemap index.
• The same host as the site: a sitemap on www that lists non-www URLs gets ignored.

After you generate it

• Upload it as /sitemap.xml and add the Sitemap line to robots.txt.
• Submit it once in Search Console under Sitemaps. Resubmit only when the structure changes, not for every new post.
• Check the Pages report in Search Console a week later: URLs in the sitemap that are "crawled, currently not indexed" are the ones that need content or links, not a resubmission.
