llms.txt Generator
Create an llms.txt file that tells ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other AI crawlers what your site is about and which pages to cite. Free.
llms.txt
# Your site name > One sentence on what this site is for.
Save this as llms.txt in the root of your domain, next to robots.txt, so answer engines find it at /llms.txt.
What llms.txt is
llms.txt is a plain markdown file at the root of a site that tells AI systems what the site is about and which pages matter, in a form a language model reads well: a title, a short description, and a list of key pages with one line each. It is a proposal, not a standard every crawler honours, but it costs one file and several AI tools already read it.
The generator crawls your site, picks the pages with the most internal links, and drafts the file. You edit the descriptions before you publish it.
What a good llms.txt contains
- One line that says what the site does, in the words a customer would use.
- The ten to thirty pages that answer real questions: guides, product pages, pricing, documentation. Not every blog post.
- A one-line description per link that says what the page answers, not its title again.
- Optional sections for docs, pricing and policies, so a model can find them without crawling.
What it does not do
- It does not block anything. Blocking is robots.txt.
- It does not replace clean HTML. A model still reads your pages; llms.txt only tells it where to look first.
- It does not guarantee citations. What earns citations is a page that answers a question in a paragraph that stands on its own.
Frequently asked questions
- Which AI crawlers read llms.txt?
- Adoption is uneven and changes month to month. Several AI search and coding tools fetch it; the major search engines have not committed to it. Treat it as a cheap, low-risk addition, not a ranking factor.
- Where does the file go?
- At https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt, served as plain text or markdown. Some sites also publish llms-full.txt with the full content of key pages.
- How is llms.txt different from a sitemap?
- A sitemap lists every indexable URL for search engines, in XML. llms.txt is a short, curated, human-readable guide for language models, with descriptions.
