What the competitor keyword finder shows

Enter a competitor's domain and the finder lists the twenty keywords that send it the most search traffic: the position it holds, monthly search volume, keyword difficulty, search intent, and the exact page that ranks. Together they show where a rival's organic traffic comes from and which of their pages earn it.

The list is sorted by estimated traffic, not by volume. A position 2 on a 3,000-search keyword sends more visitors than a position 15 on a 30,000-search one, and the finder ranks it that way.

How to find competitor keywords worth targeting

  • Run three competitors, not one. A keyword that two or three of them rank for is a market keyword; one that only one ranks for is often brand or luck.
  • Look at the ranking page, not just the keyword. If the page is a comparison, a tool, or a guide, that is the format the keyword rewards.
  • Filter by difficulty against your own site. Keywords under 40 where a competitor ranks with a thin page are the first targets.
  • Note the intent. Commercial and transactional keywords in a competitor's list are the ones tied to revenue; informational ones are how they got the authority.

Common mistakes when researching competitor keywords

  • Copying the list into a content plan. Their keywords fit their site. Take the ones your product can credibly answer and leave the rest.
  • Ignoring the country. A competitor that sells in three markets ranks for different keywords in each; check the one you compete in.
  • Treating position as fixed. Rankings move weekly. Note the date next to the position and recheck before you build a page around it.
  • Stopping at twenty. The top twenty show the pattern; the full list, and the gap between their keywords and yours, is where the plan comes from.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find what keywords my competitors rank for?
Enter their domain in the finder above and pick the country. You get the twenty keywords that bring them the most search traffic with position, volume and the ranking page. The full list and the keyword gap between two domains are in Pengu Insights.
Is the competitor keyword finder free?
Yes. Three lookups a day, twenty keywords each, no account. The free plan inside Pengu Insights lifts the daily cap and adds the keyword gap and history.
What is a competitor keyword gap?
The keywords a competitor ranks for that you do not. It is the shortest list of content opportunities you can build, because each keyword comes with proof that a site like yours can rank for it.
Can I see a competitor's paid keywords too?
This free tool shows organic keywords. Paid keywords and the ads behind them are in the competitor keywords report inside Pengu Insights, next to the organic list, so you can see where a rival buys what it cannot rank for.
