What the keyword volume checker shows

Paste up to ten keywords and pick a country. For each one the checker returns monthly search volume, cost per click, competition level, keyword difficulty (0 to 100), the search intent behind it, and a small chart of the last twelve months of demand. Keywords with no data are listed separately rather than shown as zero.

Search volume is an average of the last twelve months, which is why the trend chart matters: a keyword at 1,000 searches that is falling and one at 1,000 that is rising are different bets.

How to read search volume, difficulty and intent together

• Volume says how many people search. Difficulty says who you are up against. A 500-search keyword at difficulty 20 usually beats a 5,000-search keyword at difficulty 70 for a site without authority.
• Intent says what page can rank. Informational keywords want a guide, commercial ones want a comparison, transactional ones want a product or tool page. A great article on a transactional keyword will not rank.
• CPC is a demand signal. Advertisers pay for clicks that convert; a keyword with a $4 CPC and modest volume is worth more than a $0.10 keyword with ten times the searches.
• Check the country. "Football" means two sports depending on where you look, and volumes for the same phrase differ by 10x between markets.

Common keyword volume mistakes

• Chasing the biggest number. The keyword with the most volume is usually the one the biggest sites already own.
• Ignoring zero-volume keywords. Long, specific phrases often show no volume and still bring buyers, because the tools round small numbers down.
• Reading a spike as a trend. One month of high demand is an event; twelve months of growth is a trend. The chart shows which one you are looking at.
• Checking one keyword at a time. Paste the whole list from a brief or a Search Console export and sort by difficulty first.
