What schema markup does for a page
Schema.org markup, written as JSON-LD, tells search engines what a page is: an article, a product, a FAQ, an organisation, a local business. It does not make a page rank higher by itself. It makes the page eligible for rich results (stars, FAQs, breadcrumbs, event dates) and it gives AI answer engines clean, labelled facts to cite.
The generator builds the JSON-LD for the common types from a form, so the syntax is right the first time. You paste the output into the page head.
Which type to use
- Article or BlogPosting for editorial pages, with author, datePublished and dateModified.
- FAQPage only when the questions and answers are visible on the page. Markup for hidden content is treated as spam.
- Product with offers and aggregateRating for product pages that show a price and reviews.
- Organization on the home page, with sameAs links to your social profiles, and Person for author pages.
- BreadcrumbList on any page with a visible breadcrumb; it is the rich result Google shows most often.
Common schema mistakes
- Two BlogPosting blocks on one page from two plugins. Google picks one and does not say which.
- A FAQPage that describes questions the visitor cannot see on the page.
- Ratings on pages that show no reviews. That is the fastest way to a manual action.
- Markup that contradicts the page: a different title, price or date than the one rendered.
Frequently asked questions
- Does schema markup improve rankings?
- Not directly. It improves how the result looks and what it is eligible for, which improves click-through rate, and it makes the page easier for AI systems to quote accurately. Pages with correct markup tend to earn more clicks at the same position.
- How do I test the markup?
- Paste the page URL into Google's Rich Results Test. It shows which types were detected and any missing required fields.
- JSON-LD or microdata?
- JSON-LD. Google recommends it, it lives in one block in the head, and it does not break when the page layout changes.
