What the website traffic checker shows

Type a domain and the checker returns an estimate of its monthly search traffic in the country you pick, what that traffic would cost to buy in ads, how many keywords the domain ranks for, how many sit in the top 10, and the ten keywords that send it the most visitors. Every figure carries the date it was collected.

It is a search traffic estimate. Direct visits, social, email and referral traffic are not part of it, because no tool outside the site owner's analytics can measure those. The "traffic value" is what the same clicks would cost at current ad prices, which is the number that says whether a competitor's SEO is worth copying.

How to check website traffic in three steps

• Enter the bare domain (competitor.com, not a page URL) and choose the country where the site does most of its business. Estimates are per country; a UK retailer checked in the US will look small.
• Read the trend before the total. The movement line (keywords improved, declined, new, lost) says whether the site is growing this month. Direction survives a wrong model; the absolute number may not.
• Open the keyword table. If three keywords carry half the traffic, the site depends on them, and those are the pages to study or to compete with.

How to read a traffic estimate without fooling yourself

• Compare, do not quote. "Competitor A gets about twice competitor B" holds up. "Competitor A gets 41,200 visits" does not, because every checker models traffic from ranking positions and click-through curves.
• Small sites are noise. Below a few thousand visits a month, estimates can be off by several times. Report a range or say "too small to estimate".
• Use one tool for every domain in a comparison. Each checker has its own bias; it cancels within one tool and compounds when you mix them.
• Your own site is the exception. Google Analytics and Search Console measure it exactly. Use the checker on your competitors and your analytics on yourself.
