What the redirect checker shows

Type a URL and the checker follows every hop until it reaches a page that answers 200, listing the status code of each step. It separates permanent redirects (301 and 308) from temporary ones (302 and 307) and tells you how many hops a visitor and a crawler have to make.

How to read the result

• One hop with 301 or 308 is the goal. It passes ranking signals and costs one request.
• Two or more hops is a chain. Google follows up to ten, but every hop delays the page and leaks a little signal. Point the first URL straight at the last.
• 302 or 307 on a permanent move tells Google the old URL is coming back. If it is not, change it to 301.
• A loop (a URL that redirects to itself through other URLs) returns an error to the browser and drops the page from the index.
• http to https, non-www to www and trailing slash should each be one hop, ideally combined into one.

Common redirect mistakes

• Redirecting every deleted page to the home page. Google treats that as a soft 404. Redirect to the closest equivalent page or return a real 404.
• Changing a slug without redirecting the old one. The old URL keeps its links and rankings until it 404s.
• Redirect chains that grow one migration at a time: old domain to new domain to https to www. Collapse them after each migration.
